A Guide to Common Plastic Shopping Bag
…
1. The Standard Polyethylene (PE) T-Shirt Bag
Material: This is the classic bag made from Polyethylene (PE). It's known for being lightweight, flexible, and having good chemical stability .
Shape & Use: Featuring the iconic "T-shirt" shape with parallel handles, it's ubiquitous in retail stores, supermarkets, and farmers' markets for carrying a wide variety of goods.
Advantages: The primary strengths of PE T-shirt bags are their low production cost and excellent water resistance , making them ideal for keeping contents dry. They are also lightweight and highly durable for their weight.
Drawbacks: The significant drawback of traditional PE bags is their environmental impact. They are not biodegradable and can persist in the environment for centuries, breaking down into microplastics . Furthermore, they have limited heat resistance and are not suitable for hot foods or microwave use .
2. The High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Grocery Sack
Material: A stronger, more rigid variant of PE, known for its higher strength-to-density ratio.
Shape & Use: These are the thinner, crinkly bags often found in grocery store checkouts. They are designed for lighter loads but are surprisingly strong.
Advantages: Their main advantage is being extremely cost-effective to produce, allowing retailers to offer them at minimal or no cost. They are also very lightweight and compact, minimizing storage and transportation space.
Drawbacks: Like other PE bags, they contribute to plastic pollution if not disposed of properly. Their thinner construction means they are typically designed for single-use and have a lower tear resistance compared to thicker alternatives.
3. The Drawstring Bag
Material: Often made from PE or non-woven Polypropylene (PP).
Shape & Use: This bag features integrated drawstrings to cinch the top closed. It's commonly used for packaging produce, frozen goods, or small retail items where a secure closure is desired.
Advantages: The secure closure is the key benefit, preventing spills and protecting contents from dust and moisture. It offers convenience for storing items after the initial use.
Drawbacks: The drawstring mechanism can be a point of failure if strained beyond its capacity. For PE versions, the same environmental and heat resistance limitations apply.
4. The Flat-End Pouch
Material: Typically made from PE or multi-layer laminates for specific barriers.
Shape & Use: A simple, sealable pouch with a flat bottom that allows it to stand upright. It's widely used for packaging stationery, small hardware, food items, and cosmetics.
Advantages: The flat bottom provides stability, making it excellent for display and storage. It can be easily customized with printing and is available in various sealable options.
Drawbacks: It lacks handles, so it's not designed for heavy or bulky items carrying. Its capacity is generally limited.
